I started out this morning with the sun shinning brightly through the windows of my car, the music going, and a friend in the passenger seat. Sure, we had a few stops to make, but the day was ours for exploring. Pam (my friend who coincidentally has a broken leg) had a doctor’s appointment and so, while she was in getting a new cast, I explored the city. Then, after a quick lunch, we were off to the north shore.

Have you ever noticed how places can stay with you? How images and smells and just the feel of a place can embed itself in your mind and heart so that it comes back to you with the slightest provocation? I had forgotten about big water; the smell of it and the sharp, clean feel of a cool breeze that comes only off of one of the great lakes. Yet, it all returned with the first sight of Lake Superior. The tiredness of the past week melted away and a smile came unbidden to my lips as we drove along. I must admit, I’m glad that there weren’t many cars on the road because I didn’t know what to look at. I just wanted to take it all in.

I have the phrase, “Awake my soul and sing.” on my refrigerator. And that is what happened today as I got out and about; explored and remembered. My soul sang.

Our last stop along the lake; Split Rock Lighthouse.
